Upon arriving in Ferrara, your exploration of the city begins with a view of the ancient walls, which encircle the city in a harmonious green embrace: an extraordinary example of fortification and military defence, still well-preserved today and perfectly integrated into the urban fabric.
In the Renaissance quarter, a symbol of innovative urban planning that earned Ferrara UNESCO recognition as Europe’s first modern city, a stop in front of the Palazzo dei Diamanti is a must: famous for its façades clad in over 8,500 diamond-shaped marble blocks.
Strolling along the monumental Corso Ercole I d'Este, you reach the heart of the city, dominated by the majestic Castello Estense, a unique fortress still surrounded by its water-filled moat.
The guide’s commentary will take you through the central squares, with unmissable stops such as the Cathedral of San Giorgio, the Ducal Palace and the most charming corners of the historic centre, tracing the history of the Este family.
Lunch break to sample local specialities, such as delicate pumpkin cappellacci and the delicious torta tenerina (chocolate cake).
In the afternoon, the tour continues through the charming medieval streets of the old Jewish ghetto, until reaching Palazzo Schifanoia. Here, the guided tour inside will allow you to discover one of the city’s most important museums, home to the magnificent cycle of Renaissance frescoes in the famous “Salone dei Mesi”, a true masterpiece of Italian art.
